The Golf Card

Ah, that most uncomfortable intermingling of sport and politics — unlike my soap-boxing of yesterday, I will not offer any opinion here, but I thought this email was too interesting to not share.  Maybe you would like to sign the petition.  Or perhaps you would like to sign the other one, which I include here for fairness’ sake:

Trump has a long way to go to catch up to his would-be ousters.  I must confess that I find it fascinating that this matter has gone all the way to parliament for debate, and that Trump has played the golf card in his defense–if you ban me, no new Turnberry.  Worse, it suggests, the UK might be risking alienating “millions of Americans” who have made Trump “the forerunner by far in the 2016 Presidential Election.”

Interesting days, indeed.

(I’m not sure how I ended up on this mailing list, btw.  I would like to consider myself a “valued friend” of Scotland.  As for being a friend of Trump’s, well, let’s just say I’m still waiting for my Christmas card.)

Media Update: Petitions Committee Debate

Dear Valued Friends,

In light of the media coverage regarding the recent petitions that will be discussed in parliament on January 18, we would like to share with you directly the response of The Trump Organization and give you the opportunity to back those individuals who have initiated an opposing campaign not to ban from Mr Trump from the UK.

Media Statement
The Trump Organization, New York.

January 6, 2016

“The Trump Organization has plans to invest more than 200 million pounds into the development of the iconic Trump Turnberry resort, located in South Ayrshire, Scotland.  Our work there has been widely supported by the local community and created hundreds of jobs for the region.  Over the coming years, we intend to further develop Trump Turnberry and invest millions more at the site, creating sustained economic growth for South Ayrshire and Scotland.  Additionally, we have plans to invest 500 million pounds towards further development at the 1,400 acre Trump International Golf Links, Aberdeen, which has been consistently rated the best Modern Golf Course in Great Britain and Ireland by the prestigious Golfweek magazine and many others in the global golf community.

Any action to restrict travel would force The Trump Organization to immediately end these and all future investments we are currently contemplating in the United Kingdom.  Westminster would create a dangerous precedent and send a terrible message to the World that the United Kingdom opposes free speech and has no interest in attracting inward investment.  This would also alienate the many millions of United States citizens who wholeheartedly support Mr. Trump and have made him the forerunner by far in the 2016 Presidential Election.  Many people now agree with Mr. Trump that there is a serious problem that must be resolved.  This can only be achieved if we are willing to discuss these tough issues openly and honestly.”

We greatly appreciate your ongoing loyalty and support and wish you a healthy, happy and prosperous 2016.

  1. Politics aside, focusing on golf only, Trump is scum. I hope he sells his holding in the UK and stops embarrassing the rest of us citizens of the USA. His detestable treatment of the Scots is deplorable. I have played Turnberry several times over the years and I find no reason to make it into a boring Trump dump. If Trump bought the Mona Lisa he would want to improve the smile.
