“Who’s this guy they have speaking tonight? You read any of his books?”
“Why are we even having a speaker?”
“I have no idea.”
“I’d rather listen to myself speak.”
Such was a conversation overheard at a visit to a country club’s member-guest this year. Unbeknownst to the enthusiastic gentleman in the golf cart next to mine, that evening’s speaker was sitting next to them, weeping gently deep inside. But in a few hours’ time, they were both getting books signed and talking about their dream trip to Ireland, and I was invited back to speak at their club about my next book. I’m hoping for the chance to come surprise some golfers at your club, too. Or at least give them a good excuse to stay out late on a Thursday– I was at a book signing sounds better than I was golfing when you’re out past bedtime.
Pardon this break from news of wind and links and haggis for a self-promotional pause: I have teamed up with the golf travel gurus at Old Sod Travel for a national speaking tour of golf clubs. We have done a half-dozen engagements over the past year — a recent visit to the Member-Member tournament at Blythefield CC in Grand Rapids was very well-received, and got me thinking that some readers here might have a venue in mind for an evening of Ireland, golf, and books (with a wee bit of A Course Called the Kingdom talk as well).
We are looking to fill out the calendar with events, so if you know a golf club, Irish society, or community group looking for a fun outing where folks hear about all things Irish golf and pick up some signed books for the golfers in their lives, please let me know or speak to the events coordinator at your club.
An author visit is a little unusual on a golf club’s social calendar, but feedback on our events has been very positive (a testimonial below). So if you or your club are looking for something a little different for a tournament, dinner event, or just a reason to get folks together in the off-season, I hope we hear from you. The tour is also sponsored by the outstanding people at Tourism Ireland. I hope to have the chance to meet some new clubs and tee it up in some new places (I always speak better after a round of golf).
On behalf of myself and everyone at WSCC: Thanks so much for a great event. Many of the participants were in the club having dinner afterward and all kept saying how much they enjoyed your presentation, meeting you and getting your signed book. You have many new friends here. A number of the people who attended called or emailed me saying how much they enjoyed your presentation and the opportunity to meet you. Thanks again and come back with your next book!
